Experimental petrology
The objective of WP2 is to underpin the interpretation of natural samples (granites, volcanic rocks, melt inclusions) carried out in WP1 through high temperature and pressure experiments that elucidate the behaviour of selected trace elements during crustal differentiation of mantle-derived, volatile-bearing basaltic magmas.
Experiments will be used in three ways:
- To explore selected parts of parameter space to track phase chemistry and the behaviour of the element menu in response to different differentiation conditions.
- To perform mineral-melt trace element partitioning experiments under selected conditions.
- To investigate the controls on sulphide saturation and chalcophile element partitioning.
