Special Educational Needs at Tring

SEND students can enjoy our range of self-guided resources, and also a specifically designed workshop - Walter's World Adventure.

Our free sensory workshop can accommodate between 4-15 students.

We have a variety of self-led resources which can be used to explore the galleries.

We can also provide our Explorer Bags which include a variety of resources and toys to support engagement with our displays. These need to be booked in advance and returned when finished.

School visits, activities and workshops are free, but donations help support our vital work to look after nature and provide our learning programme. There is a recommended donation of £2 per child.

Visit our Essential information for school visits page to find out how to book and further information about your trip.

Curriculum links:

  • Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited.
  • Thinking about food chains and identifying producers, predators and prey.
  • Recognise that living things can be grouped in a variety of ways.
  • Find out about and describe the basic needs of animals, including humans, for survival (water, food and air).
Content for the workshop will be very specific to each group – it will depend on their age and their needs. This will be discussed during the booking process and we will obtain as much information as we need to ensure the workshop is pitched correctly.
Content will also depend on the children’s needs during the day and will be flexible.

Blind and partially sighted school groups can get hands on with real Museum specimens in this specifically designed workshop. Trained members of staff will introduce specimens with an audio description and students will have the opportunity to investigate and handle specimens.

There is an option of two themes: British wildlife and Under the sea.

The workshop takes place in Walter’s Workshop which has chairs and tables. It lasts between 45 minutes to 1 hour. It is for a maximum of 16 students at a time.

Upon booking please discuss the needs of your group.

During your visit you are also welcome to borrow our Tactile Bags to explore the galleries. These bags have a variety of items and specimens to bring the galleries to life.
