This large abyssopelagic species is one of a few species that have sharp-edged shoulder vaults. It was originally described from very deep water in the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench North Pacific, but all the most of recent records (16) have come from the North Atlantic from bathypelagic to abyssopelagic depths of 2000-3500m; one or two juveniles have been taken at depths of 1000m. If the North Atlantic specimens are indeed conspecific with those from the Pacific, its currently known range of 20°N-50°N, will probably be extended by further very deep sampling at oceans depths >3000m. It inclusion in the genus Loricoecia must be regarded as being tentative.
