This species was originally described by Claus from the Atlantic. However, Müller (1906) considered it to be a synonym of P. spinirostris, so for many years it went unrecognised as a distinct species. Angel (1969) demonstrated that it was a valid species and so the majority of records postdate his study. Subspecies have been described from the Mediterranean (Gooday and Angel, 1977) and from the Pacific (Martens, 1979). Poulsen (1973) placed it in a new genus Spinoecia without designating a type species. Martens (1979) considered it to be a nomen nudem, and so when he divided Poulsen’s genus he abandoned Poulsen’s name and established two new genera - Porroecia and Obtusoecia, rather curiously designating Porroecia porrecta adriatica as the type species for the genus Porroecia. Apart from three doubtful records by Fowler (1909), all records of this species are from latitudes <42°. It is a widespread but seldom numerous species that the bathymetric profiles show occurs at shallow depths of 25-200m, but slightly deeper than its sibling species spinirostris.
Living animals are translucent and lightly pigmented yellow and orange around the bases of the limbs and some of the carapace glands.
