Explore: Urban Nature workshop
We’re challenging students across the UK to help everyone better understand the nature around us in our towns and cities.
In this workshop, delivered collaboratively by The Royal Parks Learning Programme and the Natural History Museum, your students will become urban nature scientists through exploring museum specimens and investigating human impacts on the environment in Hyde Park.
They will practice working scientifically and build curriculum-linked skills to better understand the scientific research from the Natural History Museum and the role of The Royal Parks in managing the park for people and nature.
The workshop and follow up resources will empower students to ask their own scientific questions about the local urban nature issues most important to them.

Workshop outline
- Students discover the importance of understanding the different impacts that humans have on nature in towns and cities.
- Students make observations of museum specimens, practicing identification and other scientific skills.
- As a class students complete their own hands-on nature investigation out in Hyde Park.
- Students explore different effects human actions have had on the nature in Hyde Park and are challenged to come up with their own solutions to improve the park for the benefit of people and biodiversity.
- KS3 classes will also be supported to devise their own novel scientific questions to submit to Natural History Museum scientists, with the potential that one will be selected as the museum’s next big research project.

This workshop is bookable for dates up to July 2024 on the dates given below.
This workshop is suitable for Years 5-9 (ages 9-14). Maximum capacity per workshop is 30 students.
Please note: this workshop takes place in The LookOut Discovery Centre in Hyde Park. See the location on Google Maps (nearest Underground stations: Marble Arch or Hyde Park Corner).

We are particularly keen to work with schools who may have had fewer opportunities to investigate nature. We are therefore prioritizing state secondary schools from inner London boroughs with a high proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals, but all are welcome to enquire.
There are a limited number of workshops available. You therefore may be placed on a waiting list when booking. We require a minimum booking number of 10 children per session.
