Müller (1906) originally described this species as a member of his ‘procera group’. Poulsen (1973) classified all the species in this group in Claus’s genus Paraconchoecia, but Kock (1992) concluded that the members of the ‘procera group’ should be classified in a separate genus - Müller (1906) noted that specimens from the tropics and subtropics tend to be smaller than those from high latitudes in the Southern Ocean. Overall the species has been reported from latitudes from 61°N to 76°S, predominantly at depths of 800-1500m. The latitudinal variations in size are illustrated in the data tabulated below. In the North Atlantic at depths of >1500m specimens are larger, similar in size to the Southern Ocean populations. So the species may include at least two cryptic species. If the larger forms found in deep bathypelagic depths in the North Atlantic are demonstrated to be the same as the Southern Ocean animals they may be indicators of the northward spread of Antarctic water masses.
