This is another of the original six species that were described by Deevey (1968) when she established the genus. It came from the gut of a benthic fish Bassozetus normalis caught at a depth of 3165m in the Gulf of Mexico. Since then it has turned up in near-bottom or abyssopelagic samples from depths of 2000-3900m from 20°N to 50°N in the North Atlantic. It is a striking species with a pattern of dense vertical striae and the posterior margin of the carapace armed with large denticles.
