140 Records
This is one the species described by Gooday (1981) when he revised what he termed the ‘skogsbergi complex’ i.e. the species that fell within the ‘long form’ concept of C. rotundata (Müller, 1906). Iles (1953) had given the name Conchoecia skogsbergi to Müller’s long form using Skogsberg’s (1920) description of Southern Ocean material as the type description. When examining Atlantic material Gooday (1981) identified six new species, including this one. This is one of the more readily recognisable species in the complex, because the breadth of its carapace is relatively much greater than in the other species. Its known zoogeographical range is 52° to 38°S, but the majority of records are from middle latitudes in the North Atlantic. The bathymetric profiles show it ranges between 200-500m and does not undertake diel vertical migrations. Martens (1979) reported a similar form off the Chilean coast that he described as M. aff. inflata. Chavtur (2003) has recently described a subspecies inflata lata from the Pacific, which resembles Martens’ description. It is possible that when critically compared this Pacific subspecies will be found to be a different species. In their revision of the genus Metaconchoecia Chavtur and Angel are retaining this species within Metaconchoecia.
