This species was first described from off Bermuda when Deevey described six new species. Since then it has almost exclusively been recorded from the equator to 44°N in the North Atlantic, the one exception being a record by Deevey (1983) from 40°S.
It is generally taken in small numbers at depths of 600-2000m. In their revision of the genus Archiconchoecia Chavtur and Stovbun (2003) moved it into a new genus Archiconchoecetta along with ten other species with affinities to ventricosa.
